Bing Predicts Nearly Perfect in NFL Week 8; Week 9 Preview

There have been times this NFL season when Bing Predicts looked a bit clueless. With an almost perfect Week 8, Bing has silenced the doubters. Bing Predicts is the real deal.

Bing finished the week with a 13-1 record, giving the search engine its best week ever. Bing is now 80-39 (67.2%) on the season, a slight edge over last year; during the 2014 season, Bing was 79-42 (65.3%) after 8 weeks.

Bing Predicts Week 8 Recap

Bing's lone miss was a forgivable one. The search engine was 79% certain the Falcons would beat the Buccaneers in Atlanta. The rest of the world was pretty sure of this outcome as well, but the Bucs somehow pulled this one out in overtime. It's a loss the Falcons won't soon forget, but not one that's likely to change Bing's prediction algorithm.

There were plenty of close calls this week (Panthers edging the Colts in OT, the Ravens squeaking by the Chargers, the undefeated Bengals surviving in Pittsburgh), but Bing's team always managed to pull out the win. Here's a quick overview of Bing's performance this week:

  • 9-1 when favoring the home team (56-27 on the season)
  • 4-0 when favoring the away team (24-12 on the season)
  • 3-0 when predicted chance under 60% (24-19 on the season)
  • 6-0 when predicted chance between 60 and 69.9% (31-15 on the season)
  • 3-1 when predicted chance between 70 and 79.9% (22-4 on the season)
  • 1-0 when predicted chance over 80% (3-1 on the season)

Bing's playoff picture remains the same after Week 8, but this will likely change soon (get rid of the Bills already!). Check back for updates.

Bing Predicts Week 9 Preview

How will Bing follow up its near perfection? The odds of the search engine repeating this performance are pretty slim, especially with some tough matchups during Week 9. Here's what Bing is predicting for this week:

bing predicts week 9 preview

Bing expects the four remaining unbeaten teams (Patriots, Broncos, Bengals, and Panthers) to win again this week. Can we really have four 8-0 teams? The Panthers have the toughest matchup of the bunch; the Packers will certainly be out for redemption after a humiliating loss to the Broncos snapped their winning streak.

As always, Bing is siding with the home team in the majority of the games; the search engine predicts the home team will come out on top in 9 of the 13 games this week.

Here's the weekly breakdown by predicted chance:

  • 6 games with predicted chance under 60%
  • 4 games with predicted chance between 60 and 69.9%
  • 1 game with predicted chance between 70 and 79.9%
  • 2 games with predicted chance over 80%

This is the first time all season that Bing has two teams with better than 80% chance of winning. Neither of these are surprises. The Patriots and Bengals are both undefeated and facing vastly inferior opponents on their home turf. But stranger things have happened.

One of the best games this week should be the 5-2 Vikings and the 4-3 Rams facing off in Minneapolis. As a Rams fan living in Minnesota, I'm going to predict Bing gets this one wrong. It'll also be interesting to see if the Falcons can rebound after a loss at home to Tampa Bay. As bad as the 49ers are, the Falcons have looked really rotten the past three weeks. I'm surprised Bing is giving the Falcons a 63% chance of winning.

So how how will Bing do in Week 9? I underestimated the search engine last week, but I don't think Bing can repeat that performance. I predict Bing will go 8-5 this week.
