Jay Perrill | Founder, CEO / CFO

Not many people can authentically claim they were among the first in the world building websites — but Jay can. Since then, his lifelong passion has been pushing the web to its full business potential, and he has helped hundreds of businesses grow online. CEOs love Jay’s business/technology perspective and the fact that he has master’s degrees in finance and MIS. And entrepreneurs love the fact that he started Perrill — with no backing — after being told by a previous employer that the internet was “just a toy.” If you want the straight story on how to bring your brand to the web in a way that produces maximum and continuous ROI, talk to Jay. He means business.

Jay founded Perrill in 1993 with no backing and grew it from a one-man business operating out of his car to one of the region’s most successful and capable full-service digital agencies.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
One of my favorite parts of making websites has been laying down the groundwork for a great application and enabling the application to be as close to imagined as possible. Another part that excites me is creating maintainable and scalable processes that protect the application from downfalls during its evolution.

If you were lost in the wilderness…what is the one thing you would need to survive?
Realistically, a bucket. Unrealistically, a genie

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I live with 2 dogs, but neither of them are mine.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
As a designer I am constantly learning something new! With every new project, I get to learn about different industries and new technologies, that I would other wise may not have had the opportunity to.

What's something most people don't know about you?
I am a die hard hip hop music fan.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
An Eagle Scout.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
Backend software development is a lot like playing Dr. House every day. There is nothing more fun than getting important and difficult-to-solve logic problems, and figuring out solutions for them.  I’d say that’s my job in a nutshell at Perrill.

Do you have a hidden talent?
I have the arcane power to summon Jimmy Johns sandwiches!  The cast time on that spell is usually about 10 minutes.  My mana for casting spells recharges every other Friday.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Once upon a time, I wanted to be an EMT.  I landed on software development for a career instead because it’s much easier to recover from making mistakes fixing a website compared to making mistakes fixing people.  You can’t just restore a broken person from a backup.

My favorite memory was going on a cruise, and getting to explore Belize, Honduras, and the Grand Cayman Islands.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Something most people don’t know about me is that I am a hunter! I have been hunting deer and turkey since I was about 10 years old.

Teaching my kids to ride their bikes.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
I really enjoy getting to write new content every day that I can be proud of and that makes our clients happy. I never know exactly what each day will bring, which both excites me and keeps me on my toes. I like to be on my toes, just not in a ballet dancer kind of way.

What’s your favorite memory?
Ringing in the new year (1929!) at a secret speakeasy in front of a live jazz band. It also happened to be my first date with my future wife, so I’m sure that had something to do with my fond recollection.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I’m half deaf. I have a lazy eye and wear glasses. My olfactory sense is severely lacking. My taste buds are all but ruined from years of spicy food abuse. And my sense of touch isn’t very good either… but on the other hand it is!

What excites or inspires you about your work?
The SEO field is always evolving, always changing up the game plan. I love the challenge of it, of being on the cutting edge. When the algorithms change and suddenly old techniques don’t work anymore and you’ve got to adapt or die, that is where I rise to meet the occasion.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I was in kindergarten, I remember clearly saying I wanted to build houses, have a giant beard, and be a wizard who battles dragons. Two outta three, so far, not too shabby.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
My Spotify playlists are all exactly 100 songs, each song is from a different source, artist, and album, with no doubling up on any criteria. These playlists are, on average, about 6.5 hours of music. Or put it another way, the length of a single shift at a coffee shop. You could put a playlist on shuffle and start your shift never hear a repeat.

What’s your favorite memory?
Probably building my first PC.  I saved up for a super long time and was finally able to build the one I’ve always wanted.  I did all my research and ordered all the different parts and when it came in the mail It was like Christmas.  Except I was Santa and the kid and the adult who had to help put the toy together for the kid, then the kid again.  Then the adult again when the motherboard broke then the kid finally again for good.

Do you have a hidden talent?
I can do a standing backflip from the ground but don’t really show anyone.  The time needs to be right for it to happen.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Owner and creator of a successful and original website.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
My work is a constant learning opportunity that keeps me curious and engaged.

What’s your favorite memory?
One of my favorite memories is a Christmas spent with family in Dallas, TX. It snowed around 2 inches and the whole city seemed to shut down (which was laughable to see as a MN native). I had a blast witnessing my cousins drive to dinner in the snow for the first time.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up, I want to be an interior designer and a mom. I also want to live a self-sufficient life off-the-grid.

What’s your favorite memory?
Going to the bookstore with my dad on Sunday afternoons. He’d buy me hot cocoa, then let me wander around and read for a while. It was always my favorite part of the week.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I want to have a hobby farm someday! Ideally, with enough space for vegetables, fruit trees, an apiary, and several reindeer.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
I love learning a new skill and then successfully executing it for the first time. I like the feeling of accomplishment it brings me.

What’s your favorite memory?
I have too many good ones to choose from, but the most recent would be this past April when my buddy and I went on a road trip up the Pacific Coast Highway. The first night we slept in our car right next to the ocean in Big Sur, California and we could hear the waves crashing onto the coast as we were going to sleep.

If you were lost in the wilderness…what is the one thing you would need to survive?
I’m going to go very basic here and say water. I hopefully watched enough Man vs. Wild when I was a kid to figure out the rest of the survival stuff…
