Jay Perrill | President

Not many people can authentically claim they were among the first in the world building websites, but Jay can. It started as a hobby while he was a grad student at the University of Minnesota in the early days of Gopher protocol and the Veronica search engine. Since then, his lifelong passion has been pushing the web to its full business potential, and he has helped hundreds of businesses grow online. Jay has established himself as a well-respected businessman and web expert in the Twin Cities, sharing his vast web and digital marketing knowledge on many outlets including WCCO radio.

CEOs love Jay’s business/technology perspective and the fact that he has master’s degrees in finance and MIS. And entrepreneurs love the fact that he started Perrill—with no backing—and after being told by a previous employer that the internet was “just a toy.”

If you want the straight story on how to bring your brand to the web in a way that produces maximum and continuous ROI, talk to Jay. He means business.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
One of my favorite parts of making websites has been laying down the groundwork for a great application and enabling the application to be as close to imagined as possible. Another part that excites me is creating maintainable and scalable processes that protect the application from downfalls during its evolution.

If you were lost in the wilderness…what is the one thing you would need to survive?
Realistically, a bucket. Unrealistically, a genie

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

What excites or inspires you about your work?
PPC marketing, naturally, is fun: the art of speculating consumer intent and delivering advertisements that are valuable, transparent and trusted to consumers. The targeting metrics to deliver the advertisements continue to vary, so continuous learning remains a key to future success.

What’s your favorite memory?
I traveled to Europe last summer and checked the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain and Italy from my bucket list.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I referee high school and college basketball.

Reconciling the books each month and paying off bills.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
Every project is different and offers it’s own unique challenges. I like solving problems and fitting all of the pieces together in the large puzzle that web development creates.

Do you have a hidden talent?
I went to school for illustration and have had my work featured in several published comic books and graphic novels.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I love what I do now! Web Development.

Any silly thing my daughter does.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

What excites/inspires you about your work?
Backend software development is a lot like playing Dr. House every day. There is nothing more fun than getting important and difficult-to-solve logic problems, and figuring out solutions for them.  I’d say that’s my job in a nutshell at Perrill.

Do you have a hidden talent?
I have the arcane power to summon Jimmy Johns sandwiches!  The cast time on that spell is usually about 10 minutes.  My mana for casting spells recharges every other Friday.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Once upon a time, I wanted to be an EMT.  I landed on software development for a career instead because it’s much easier to recover from making mistakes fixing a website compared to making mistakes fixing people.  You can’t just restore a broken person from a backup.

If you were lost in the wilderness… what is the one thing you would need to survive?
The DVD box set of Star Trek: The Next Generation should keep me sane, and the discs for season 1 can be broken so their sharp edges can be used for tools!  All I would need is to rig up a coconut DVD player.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
I really enjoy getting to write new content every day that I can be proud of and that makes our clients happy. I never know exactly what each day will bring, which both excites me and keeps me on my toes. I like to be on my toes, just not in a ballet dancer kind of way.

What’s your favorite memory?
Ringing in the new year (1929!) at a secret speakeasy in front of a live jazz band. It also happened to be my first date with my future wife, so I’m sure that had something to do with my fond recollection.

If you were lost in the wilderness… what is one thing you would need to survive?
An unopened mystery FedEx package. It would provide me the life purpose I would need to one day make it back to society. Of course, I’ll find out years later that it contained a plethora of invaluable survival gear the whole time.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
A slightly older, more crotchety version of myself.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

What excites or inspires you about your work?
The SEO field is always evolving, always changing up the game plan. I love the challenge of it, of being on the cutting edge. When the algorithms change and suddenly old techniques don’t work anymore and you’ve got to adapt or die, that is where I rise to meet the occasion.

What’s your favorite memory?
Family road trip, this was years ago, where my father was driving and my mother sitting right behind him. She had a package of Oreos on her lap, and she took one, opened it, licked the cream out, and handed the empty Oreo to my father. He ate it without even noticing. He asked for another, and she obliged, but not before opening it, licking the cream out, handing it forward. This continued for miles. Dad never caught on.

If you were lost in the wilderness…what is the one thing you would need to survive?
Potable water is crucial! I’ll take a LifeStraw and meet the rest of the challenges within the wilds head on.

Do you have a hidden talent?
I was always rather keen on those Magic Eye images, where you relax your eyes to create a hidden 3D image. This talent has zero monetary value.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I was in kindergarten, I remember clearly saying I wanted to build houses, have a giant beard, and be a wizard who battles dragons. Two outta three, so far, not too shabby.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
My Spotify playlists are all exactly 100 songs, each song is from a different source, artist, and album, with no doubling up on any criteria. These playlists are, on average, about 6.5 hours of music. Or put it another way, the length of a single shift at a coffee shop. You could put a playlist on shuffle and start your shift never hear a repeat.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
I love learning new things and since programming is always changing it is almost impossible to learn everything.  I know that there is always more to learn and things to improve on.

What’s your favorite memory?
Probably building my first PC.  I saved up for a super long time and was finally able to build the one I’ve always wanted.  I did all my research and ordered all the different parts and when it came in the mail It was like Christmas.  Except I was Santa and the kid and the adult who had to help put the toy together for the kid, then the kid again.  Then the adult again when the motherboard broke then the kid finally again for good.

If you were lost in the wilderness…what is the one thing you would need to survive?
Coffee.  I’m okay with the prospect on being stuck in the wilderness slowly leading to my demise, but if I don’t have coffee in the morning I can get fussy.

Do you have a hidden talent?
I can do a standing backflip from the ground but don’t really show anyone.  The time needs to be right for it to happen.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Owner and creator of a successful and original website.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

What’s your favorite memory?
One of my favorite memories is a Christmas spent with family in Dallas, TX. It snowed around 2 inches and the whole city seemed to shut down (which was laughable to see as a MN native). I had a blast witnessing my cousins drive to dinner in the snow for the first time.

Do you have a hidden talent?
A hidden talent of mine is that I love to doodle. I could do so for hours on end and easily fill up entire pages of little doodles.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up, I want to be an interior designer and a mom. I also want to live a self-sufficient life off-the-grid.

What excites or inspires you about your work?
I really like helping people and solving problems. When a client has an issue on or with their website I like to try and investigate the problem myself to better understand the issue and if I can solve it, I will do that. If I can’t solve it than I like working with the developer who can. I like to know as much about my client and their website as possible; which makes it easier to work with my internal teams and gives my client more confidence in us.

What’s your favorite memory?

He responds with “well, you better cash it in now!” And then he laughs his Kirby Puckett laugh. As a 9-year-old and having the most famous Twins player acknowledge what you said was pretty awesome!
